News came to us that there are soldiers going around in the village from house to house killing civilian people, shooting stabbing or hanging them. One incident we heard about a family where they took the Father and hung him, killed the mother but left the children to witness that. What a terrible shock for the children to live with.
Like they say bad news travels fast and that was enough time for us to move on in a hurry. Sooner or later we had to move anyway but this was serious and there was no time to waste.
Later I found out, it was that day that my Dad asked to leave the hospital to check on his family. Everyone in Germany heard about the big bombing of Dresden. He went to our address to find out there was nothing left. Standing in the middle of a big pile of rubble not knowing if we made it out alive, or if we are buried under there, he wept uncontrollably. There was no place to find out or ask questions.
